GRANDWELD builds aluminium and steel boats

Grandweld, part of ATOS International was established in 1984 in Al Jadaf and has been engaged in ship design, building and repairs since its inception. A major contributor to the shipping scene, the company has taken on the challenge of building two cruise boats one each with an aluminium and a steel body.

“Overall length is 21.33 metres and breadth (moulded) is 6 metres and depth is 2.5 metres. The speed of the Aluminium boat is 18 knots and of the steel one is 12 knots with conventional pin screw, diesel engines and reverse reduction gear,”  says M. K. Raghunathan, Operations Manager with Grandweld.

“We design, fabricate and outfit the boats with all components, including accommodation space, engines, electrical installation and piping. It is a turn-key project up to trial and commissioning,” he adds.

Grandweld has an experienced team of welders and fabricators to carry out high precision and complex fit-up under the supervision of experienced engineers. The company is engaged in the repair of all kinds of vessels including cargo ships and tankers. 

“Our challenging assignments include fabrication, erection and commissioning, repair and fabrication of offshore projects,” says Raghunathan.
 
As an ISO certified company it has a strict safety policy. The first audit for up-gradation to ISO 9002 will take place in September, 2002. Strict quality control measures are in place.

GOLTENS Dubai - eyeing the offshore market

Set up in 1989 and headquartered in Al Jadaf, Goltens Dubai has a network in 15 countries all over the world and offers a range of services suited to the local needs. Jan-Erik Granholdt, President and C.O.O. of Goltens worldwide, has his offices within the premises. As a major repair company with 400 technicians from 16 nationalities, it has been an active contributor to ship repair and maintenance in Al Jadaf.

“We provide all the traditional services related to ship repairing and maintenance and also offer specialised services that are unique to Goltens like repairing governors, in situ machinery, field system repair, turbo chargers, much of the mechanical work associated with slow speed and high speed diesel engines, electrical and mechanical work of a ship, and oil rigs. We do a lot of offshore work as well,” says Ian Anderson, Director - Quality, Safety and Environment.

Having bases in Fujairah, Jebel Ali, Port Rashid, Sharjah and Ajman, the company finds Al Jadaf convenient, due to its central location. “Since a lot of our activity is offshore, it is easier for our men to go to work,” says Anderson.

The company does lot of work for US, Canadian and French navies. “We have fleet agreements with many of the shipping companies. We have done major work for the French company CGG, geographical survey vessels. We have various agencies for diesel engine makers ie. Mitsubishi, Pielstick, BMZ etc.”

The company boasts of a very good safety record and is committed to occupational health. “The workforce is as good as the treatment it gets. We go the extra mile by providing workers with light weight suits, all safety equipment, and rehydrant minerals,” states Anderson. Safety and quality inspectors pay regular visits to offshore facilities.

The company has introduced new services into the market such as diesel engine analysis system called diesel doctor, deep well pump servicing, and LPG/RIFA services. According to Anderson, “We are upgrading our turbochargers, hydraulics facility and expanding more and more into the offshore market now, taking up more of oil and gas related jobs on the rigs.”

ALBWARDY MARINE ENGINEERING - building on experience

One of the oldest companies to be set up in Al Jadaf, the company has an experienced multi-national workforce, catering to the ship repair sector. The company provides a range of services related to ship repairs like, blasting and painting, hull steel work repairs and renewals, engine overhauls, sea valve and pump maintenance. It also offers certain specialist activities.

The company has "riding squads" to carry out on voyage repairs. Such repairs are carried out at all the major ports and anchorages of the United Arab Emirates. To serve its clients better, Albwardy Marine Engineering has a base at Fujairah. 

The company's Dubai machine shop is well equipped and has large horizontal and vertical boring machines. It also has an electrical workshop, a hydraulic services division, and diving services division. Based in Fujairah, the Albwardy Shipping agency operates a fleet of crew/utility boats for supplies and crew change to vessels. 

Albwardy Diving Services is based in Fujairah and is outfitted with the latest equipment for underwater hull cleaning and propeller polishing, underwater hull inspection and class approved surveys and underwater blanking and welding. 

The company's yacht division undertakes marine aluminium welding and designs and constructs yacht superstructures. Albwardy Marine Engineering is the authorized service agent for Yanmar Marine Diesel Engines. It is the authorized sales and stockist for DMI (Europe) supplying fully reconditioned components for diesel engines on an exchange basis.

SAIFEE's international designs

Saifee Trading Company is one of the oldest companies to set up in Al Jadaf, with an experience of nearly 21 years. The company is owned by Hasan Nadjmuddin and specialises in procurement of spares for all types of equipment for tankers and ships and oil companies. The products include electrical items, life saving equipment, valves, ropes etc.

“The company maintains an exhaustive range of supplies as listed in the Int’l Marine Purchasing Association (IMPA) catalogue. At a time, we nearly have $6 million worth  of   stock. This  provides  us with an edge over others,” says N. Sriram, Operations Manager.

A likely area for expansion, for the company is Singapore or Houston. “We have an office in Fujairah and deliver to other ports. 

We get a lot of orders from international clients. The stocks come from China, Europe, Japan and Korea,” he adds. 

On Al Jadaf, he says, “We are at the heart of the marine market; it is advantageous in that it provides all the facilities.” 

The company’s clients among others include National Iranian Tanker, Andros Maritime UK, Kuwait Oil Tanker and European Navigation.

TECH INTERNATIONAL - offering 'Thordon' bearing solutions

Tech International - Dubai is the exclusive dealer of 'Thordon' marine bearings in the Middle East. The company has its headquarters in Oman. It has been active in Dubai for the last 10 years.

Known for their reliability, Thordon bearings are pollution free and are used in propeller shaft, rudder, deck equipment and repair and conversion of offshore projects. “Our approach is to supply products and value added services. The company provides technical services prior to and after sales,” says I.P. Singh, General Manager of Tech International.

“We stock a large inventory of the largest bearing (1100 mm) in the world. We are able to cater to the immediate requirements and our delivery system works round the clock,” adds Mr. Sayed Josh Ali, Assistant Manager - Sales. The company has primarily been delivering bearings for propellers and rudders to all ship owners / repair yards all over the Middle East.

INTEROCEAN - expansion plans ahead

Set up in 1991, Interocean Ship Repairs L.L.C. is a diversified group, having its own infrastructure for ship repairs and doing offshore maintenance. It carries out projects in countries like Iran, Oman, and Qatar. The company also has its own supply boats and barges. 

It has a team of 375 technicians carrying out jobs such as pipe and steel fabrication, blasting, painting and other mechanical engineering work in ships. “We also undertake work such as blasting and painting of offshore platform structures. We are always working to capacity. 

We are competitive and have our own infrastructure,” says Viresh Chhabra, Director. The company undertakes both land based and ship repair projects in Fujairah, where it has a sister set up. Its team also works on facilities in Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah. 

Interocean recently undertook a total refit of a vessel for Iranian Offshore Oil Construction Company (IOOC), a branch of National Iranian Oil Company at a cost of one million dollars. On expansion plans Chhabra says, "We are planning to set up another facility similar to Interocean, in GCC countries in the near future, with 80 to 100 employees.”

Aalborg works on FPSO Thalassa

Aalborg Industries has been operating in Dubai for 12 years. Its activities initially concentrated on after sales service on their Danish produced marine boilers, which later extended to all makes of boilers including industrial boilers in countries such as UAE, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon. Its set-up in Al Jadaf helps it readily access manpower, material, spares and services like NDT testing, transport and crane assistance.

According to Jeroen van Riel, General Manager, one of the major projects carried out among others for international and local clients this year, was on the tanker Bourgogne managed by Tecto of Belgium. In the tanker, both boilers were completely retubed. Work entailed burner management and renewal of automation panels.

The company is presently working on the FPSO Thalassa. This project will last until mid December. The work includes boiler re-tubing and renewal of super heaters and economizers. Other projects range from super heater renewals for four boilers on board two American managed vessels to the renewal of the complete pressure part of a fully re-designed auxiliary boiler for a local customer.
