Abu
Dhabi and Klang, sign MOU
The Abu
Dhabi Seaport Authority, Port of Mina Zayed, Abu Dhabi has signed a
memorandum of understanding with The Port Klang Authority to establish a
sisterly port relationship.
The main intention of the MOU is "to expand and deepen mutual
commercial benefits in terms of further developing traffic volume and
market expansion in the face of dynamic competitive environment,"
stated the pair in a recent statement.
By
forging a port relationship with Mina Zayed, The Port Klang Authority
hopes to further enhance working relationship with Middle East ports. It
is in line with the Malaysian government's call to enhance bilateral trade
and investment links with United Arab Emirates (UAE), Syria, Egypt and
other Middle East countries.

Abu
Dhabi to play host to global shipping meet
A number of issues
related to the shipping industry will come up for discussion when
Abu Dhabi plays host to the mid-term board meeting of the
International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH) to be held
here from April 19-25.
Dignitaries
at the meet would get an excellent opportunity to exchange views and
experiences particularly in view of the fact that the Middle East
and the Gulf housed a number of key ports. The Abu Dhabi port has
formed a number of committees to handle preparations for the event
and achieve the economic goals by familiarising the IAPH members
with the progress made by the Abu Dhabi Sea Port Authority.
Among
the delegates participating in the meeting are Dr. Akio Someya of
Japan, the current IAPH president and Dominic Taddeo, former IAPH
president

KHORFAKKAN
CONTAINER BREAKTHROUGH
Khorfokkan
Container Terminal handled its one millionth TEU (20-foot container) in
early December almost one month earlier than last year, the port announced
yesterday.
The
terminal, operated by Gulftainer on behalf of Sharjah Ports Authority,
offloaded the container from the Japan Senator and dispatched it to the
receiver, Computer Supplies Ltd of Sharjah, straight from the ship's side.

SHIPYARD REPORTS USD$70 MILLION SALES IN 2001
Bahrian-based
Arab Shipyard and repair Yard's sales in the first ten months of
2001 reached USD$70 million, by repairing 89 vessels, most being
very large crude carriers. This was disclosed after the company's
board meeting this month, when it approved the budget for next year.

EVALUATES IMPACTS OF SEA SHIPMENT FEES INCREASE
According
to Al-Hayat newspaper (Nov 26, 2001), the Egyptian government
recently discussed the impact of increasing sea shipment fees on
Egyptian imports, exports and tourism. Several international lines
have increased their fees following the events of September 11. Sea
Shipment Companies in Egypt incurred $250 million losses due to the
price increase. Specialists warned that if sea shipment fees remain
high, movement through Egyptian seaports and the Suez Canal will be
significantly reduced.

& RICKMERS IN NEW BREAK-BULK DEAL
Islamic Republic of Iran
Shipping Lines (IRISL) and Rickmers Linie GmBH & Cie KG have reached an agreement on joint
cooperation for a new break-bulk service from Europe to the Gulf, Iran and
Pakistan. According to Ken Dinnadge, Business Manager—Dry Cargo of Gulf
Agency Shipping, the local agents for Rickmers, this new service will
commence middle of October 2001 and will connect the ports of Hamburg,
Antwerp and Genoa with Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and Bandar Abbas.

SHIPPING OPENS OFFICE IN DUBAI
Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem,
CEO of Dubai Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation inaugurated the
Dubai Office of Samudera Emirates Shipping LLC, a partnership between
Samudera Shipping Line (SSL) of Singapore, Foremost Maritime Pte Ltd,
Mohammed Noor Al Khaja a Dubai businessman and Rehmatulla Nagji of Gulf
Container Lines (GCL).
Samudera Shipping Line
is a public listed shipping group based in Singapore and has expanded
rapidly to become a leading regional shipping line. The company has a
throughput of more than one million TEUs at the port of Singapore and is
rated the sixth in terms of throughput.
Samudera has been
operational in the Gulf—Middle East since October 1998.according to
Saliya Senanayake, Managing Director, West Asia, Samudera Shipping Line
the company hopes to accomplish 200,000 TEUs throughput per annum from the
UAE hub alone by the close of 2002.
