Yet another issue of Air Cargo Update has come your way to update you on the latest happenings in the air cargo industry. This time it is a dual attraction for the Middle East region that is taking the crowd by storm - the Dubai Air Show and the ACI / World Asia Conference.
Dubai is hosting the Eighth Dubai International Aerospace Exhibition, Dubai Air Show 2003 from December 7th to 11th at the Airport Expo. This trail-blazing event showcases Dubai as a major hub for aviation business.
Concurrently, Sharjah International Airport is organizing the 13th Airports Council International (ACI) World / Asia Conference & Exhibition during 5-8 December 2003. This exhibition serves as an annual get-together of the airport industry toward attracting prime aviation and government officials, and international organizations, displaying their broad spectrum of products and services to their existing and prospective clients.
In this issue, we have introduced a new section, ‘Air Logistics Centres, Cities and Airport Free Zones’, which talks about the correlation between air logistics sector and the

burgeoning free zone concept.
Global economic recovery is the key to aviation sector’s growth. As you are aware, the airline industry is witnessing a plethora of activities in terms of consolidations, strategic planning for profitable business growth, evolution of ‘Low Cost’ airlines and phased infrastructure investments, to mention a few. The latest to join the bandwagon is the fleet expansion and renewal program, which is primarily targeted at building the airlines to keep pace with the fast-changing economy and to gain that competitive edge.
The rapid rise of ‘Low Cost’ business model provides high aircraft utilization and reduced distribution costs. However, constraints are experienced in this model in terms of limited capacity, congestion and competition. Airports and airlines need to work in sync in rejuvenating air transport growth through optimization of business relationships with effective incentives and sharing of risks.
Since we are towards the close of the year 2003, I wish to express all Air Cargo Update readers,

‘Merry Christmas
and
a Prosperous 2004’.
