     oRequest to renew clothing import embargo

REQUEST TO RENEW CLOTHING IMPORT EMBARGO

According to Al-Bayan newspaper (November 26, 2001), members of the Egyptian parliament submitted an urgent to Prime Minister, Atef Ubeid, demanding the that the embargo imposed on clothes imports last until January 2003 instead of next January 2002. Parliament members advised the Prime Minister to urgently negotiate the WTO in order to delay the embargo lift by at least a year. They said that the recession in Egyptian markets worsened since the American campaign against Afganistan and the local clothing industry is suffering from overstocked warehouses.
