Muscat: US construction firm Hillwood Development has pulled out of joint venture with the Omani government to build a free trade zone in the south of the state. Diplomats blamed the decision by the Texas-based company to abandon the planned Salalah Port Free Zone on bureaucratic issues. Hillwood, which held a majority stake in the project, was not willing to go ahead with the investment, Jamal Tawfiq, director general of Ports and Maritime at the Communications Ministry, has been quoted as saying. The government has formed a committee to review the Salalah free trade zone after this withdrawal and is looking for another partner.
