The
Supply Chain & Logistics Group (SCLG) of Middle East in
conjunction with The Council of Logistics Management (CLM)
Roundtable conducted its first workshop in Dubai today, September
19, 2004, at Dusit Dubai on Sheikh Zayed Road, followed by
a Networking evening with dinner on cruise. CLM and SCLG together
aim at providing educational opportunities, professional growth
to develop the logistics industry in the UAE and the Middle
East. A host of prominent members of the Group and industry
attended the conference.
In
his welcome address to the participants, Shashi Shekhar, President,
Supply Chain and Logistics Group said,"Supply Chain and
Logistics Group is committed to build a cadre of competent,
efficient and intellectually alert supply chain and logistics
professionals"
With
a mission to serve the evolving logistics professionals, three
prominent and distinguished members of the organisation were
carefully selected to conduct a workshop on Purchasing and
Inventory Management: Supply Chain Perspective. The three
speakers, Mr Krishnan Sugavanam, Managing Director, Mantis
Middle East, Mr Jayachand Pachakkil, Manager, Client &
Inventory Process, PWC Logistics, and Dr. K. M. Madrecha,
Projects and Quality Manager, UAE & Oman, Kanoo Group
diligently contributed in developing, advancing and disseminating
logistics knowledge to the delegates.
Mr.
Krishnan Sugavanam presented the concepts that drive Demand
Forecasting and Replenishment Planning which results in inventory
optimization, increased sales and better customer service.
He said that mapping the lifecycle of the product and considering
components such as seasonality and trends are important for
preparing a good Demand Forecast. He added further that determining
customer service level for skills and deriving buffer stocks
dynamically in accordance with customer service level are
the most important factors for replenishment planning.
Jayachand's
talk focussed on practical approaches to Inventory Management
and the measures adopted by Supply Chain solution providers
to enhance the Inventory Management capabilities of their
customers. He also presented many examples of solutions which
have been implemented by PWC Logistics to improve the Visibility,
Velocity and Accuracy of their clients' Inventory.
Dr.
K. M. Madrecha conducted a session on "Purchasing Decisions
to include Inventory Planning & Control". The session
included importance of "Purchasing and Inventory Control
Function" in improving company profitability by 10 to
30% using better purchasing management practices and scientific
inventory management tools. The simple inputs when used by
the participants in their day to day working will help to
improve effectiveness of their functions and obtain results
in a short span of 6 months to 1 year. He also explained how
"Supply Chain Mgmt" discipline can be raised to
a level of the Board Room.
The
workshop was very interactive with all participants engaged
in a one to one discussion with the speakers. The session
concluded after an extensive question-answer session. The
participants then proceeded to the Bur-Dubai Creek for a networking
dinner on cruise.

We
are only a few days away from the most important annual event
in the region for executives, leaders and managers involved
in warehousing & distribution business functions. The
feature that impresses me most about the speakers at the Forum
is that they are "practitioners" - hands-on executives
with a wide range of experience - rather than "theorists"
with an academic approach to our vital industry. The other
key reason for you to attend an event such as this is to network
with your professional peer group in this region. I am sure
that you will make contacts at this event, amongst the delegates
and speakers, that you will find useful in the future as you
face the wide range of business challenges that are part of
our fast growing and continually changing profession.
