Al Jadaf is strategically located at the end of Dubai creek in close proximity to wildlife sanctuary and Dubai city itself, which is fast outgrowing its boundaries. But as a marine industrial facility, it has lot of activities that have the potential to harm the environment. The management of Al Jadaf has been sensitive to the issue and is maintaining strict controls on negative practices. Hamed Bin Lahej, General Manager of Al Jadaf insists that protecting the environment should be everyone’s concern, as it would mean providing a healthy and cleaner environment for the next generation.

Since Al Jadaf mirrors the multi-ethnic identity of Dubai, a multi-pronged promotional strategy would prove effective. Posters and hoardings are used to disseminate the message on environment protection. According to Bin Lahej, the infrastructure facilities at Al Jadaf are being constantly upgraded. An efficient waste disposal and drainage system has been developed. Each company has its own environment and safety policy to help reduce and control pollution. Through circulars and periodic meetings, companies are apprised of Al Jadaf’s position on pollution control.

The management representatives hold regular meetings with Dubai Municipality officials to assess rules and regulations and to review their implementation.

Contractors are apprised of the policy and legal issues. A boat detects oil spills and pollution levels every week. “We also persuade companies to control grit blasting and use alternative methods like water blasting and to carry out potentially polluting activities at specific times only. Internal audits curb mismanagement,” says Bin Lahej.
The Dubai Ship Docking Yard community will become part of the Dubai Marine City. Rules and regulations pertaining to environment will be in place right from the beginning. Technology will be put into appropriate use to manage the environment and lessen pollution. “We are on course to achieve ISO 14001. But our interest would be to go beyond certification and sustain the interest among companies to maintain a clean and safe environment for posterity,” says Bin Lahej.
