ME
countries are opening up their airports for private
sector participation,
Julian de la Camara , Director User Charges
Infrastructure Economic Strategy, International Air
Transport Association (IATA), announced recently.
Oman
has already done it in Muscat Airport, while Iran and
Jordan are considering the privatisation of some of
their airports in the near future. Oman has opened the
Muscat airport capital to a consortium of companies that
will come to develop and operate the airport under a
25-year contract. Egypt now has a new structure
according to which airports are autonomous but not
privatized.

700 million expansion programme for Bahrain International
Airport.
The
Bahrain International Airport (BIA) has embarked on a $ 700
million expansion
project. More than $ 200 million has already been pumped into
the BIA expansion programme since 1994 with another $ 500
million earmarked
for the next five years.
One of the next projects to be finished will be an
airport hotel due for completion at the end of 2002 which is
to be operated by Movenpick.

Dubai
International airport ranks first in the Arab World
Dubai
International Airport has been ranked 26th globally in terms
of the cargo volume handled by the airports, the world over,
during January-November, 2001.
The
preliminary report by Airports Council International (ACI)
prepared on the top 30 ACI airports by passengers traffic,
cargo volume and aircraft movements, shows that Dubai airport
has handled 574,520 tonnes of cargo during this period, which
included loaded and unloaded freight and mail.
In
this cargo category, while Memphis stood at the number one
slot with 2.366 million tonnes, Los Angeles stood second with
1.951 million tonnes.
Interestingly,
in the individual month of November, Dubai has improved its
position in the cargo volume category from 26 to 21 with the
cargo handling volume reaching 60,524 tonnes.
