| Live South African turbot fish goes east
Sixty Kilograms of live turbot fish arrived in perfect condition from South Africa for the first time in Singapore, which could very well be the start of a lucrative market. The Van Diemen Sea Food Group plans to increase the consignment to 200 kg a week with 500 kg becoming the ultimate objective. Hans Duncker, general manager Hellmann Worldwide Logistics (HWL) Cape Town, believes that South African turbot cannot compete with the European market due to the freight cost but to Singapore and Hong Kong, it is competitive enough.
The Far East is a major market for fish, with Hong Kong alone requiring six to seven million fish a day. The South African turbot requires two years to mature and is farmed by Jacobsbaai Sea Products.
