Air Algerie has taken delivery of two new Boeing 737-600s as part of a complete fleet renewal program. The airline’s aggressive renewal effort includes seven new 737-800s and five new 737-600s.

Air Algerie is one of the largest air carriers in North Africa with scheduled passenger and cargo service to destinations throughout Europe, the Middle East as well as northern and western Africa.

The 737-600 is one of the most technologically advanced airplanes in the single-aisle market.
It flies higher, faster and farther than its competition. With a Boeing 737 taking off every 5.6 seconds from the world’s airports, these are the best selling aircrafts in aviation history with more than 5,000 orders to date.

Managing Director of Air Namibia takes over as new IATA Regional Director for Africa

Peter Chikumba has been appointed as the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) regional Director for Africa, effective September 16, 2002 and will be based at IATA’s office in Nairobi, Kenya. This will provide opportunity for greater collaboration with other organizations in Nairobi, in particular AFRAA and ICAO. The posting will strengthen co-ordination with IATA’s African Regional Office for Operations & Infrastructure.

Peter takes over from Sassy N’Diaye who will retire on December 31, 2002 after over 30 years of service to IATA and African aviation. IATA Director General and CEO, Giovanni Bisignani commented that, “Sassy N’Diaye’s knowledge, experience and ‘savoir faire’ will be missed greatly by all at IATA and in African aviation. His contributions to the industry have been immeasurable and we wish him well in his retirement. We also welcome Peter Chikumba to the IATA team. Our priority is to better understand and effectively respond to the changing needs of our members. I am confident that Peter’s skills and experience will be of great value to our members in Africa.”

Peter brings over 25 years of aviation experience to the job with Air Zimbabwe and Air Namibia. He joins IATA from his current position as Managing Director of Air Namibia. “Aviation is an essential part of African life and I look forward to ensuring that IATA is a key player in ensuring its robust future development,” states Chikumba.

SAA Cargo gets moving

Staff at SAA Cargo were moved by a request from Clive Simkins who met a fellow delegate by the name of Unkulunkulu at a conference in Dar es Salaam. The delegate who hailed from Kenya was severely crippled and struggled to walk on his crutches made from spade handles. Simkins purchased some lightweight aluminium crutches at a cost of R200 but was quoted R2500 to fly them up to Kenya. SAA Cargo stepped in and transported the new crutches to Nairobi free of charge. Now Unkulunkulu walks a little easier.
