DAS Air Cargo has been awarded “Best Cargo Airline to Africa 2003” and “Best All Freighter Carrier 2003” at the Air Cargo News Airline of the Year Function held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel London on April 26th.

The carrier topped the poll in the African category for the third time, after receiving the most votes from the worldwide forwarding community. This was the first time the carrier has also been voted “Best All Freighter Airline”.

“The award for the Best All Freighter Airline was particularly pleasing” said Andy King Operations Director for the Airline. “We are well known as the Leading All Cargo Carrier to Africa, but this second award shows we are now

seen also as a Worldwide Cargo Carrier. I would like to thank our Customers throughout the world who have supported us and voted in this poll, also to all our staff that made it possible”.

DAS Air Cargo operates a fleet of 5 DC10-30F aircraft on scheduled and charter services, linking Europe, Middle East and Africa, with hubs in London, Amsterdam, Dubai, Lagos and Entebbe. The carrier also offers availability for ad-hoc and contract charters.

KENYA AIRWAYS suspends launch of new routes

Kenya Airways has suspended its planned inaugural flights to Hong Kong and Bangkok due to the outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. The flights, scheduled to begin on June 1, 2003, will remain suspended until the disease has been contained and a World Health Organisation status report received.
Kenya Airways had planned to start flights to the two destinations as part of its network expansion development.
Meanwhile, Kenya Airways has released its operating results for March, 2003 indicating an 11 per cent growth over the same period the previous year.

According to Kenya Airways, all regions, except Europe registered capacity growth.
However, the airline said the Gulf War and the outbreak of SARS in Asia seriously reduced traffic levels, eliminating any positive gains made after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack in the US. The routes affected by the two catastrophes are West and Central Africa, where passengers connect to Dubai and the Far East.
The East African region recorded a 19 per cent growth. Total domestic capacity grew by 8 per cent over the previous year, with Mombasa registering 11 per cent growth.

Cargolux reduces fuel surcharge
Cargolux has announces a further reduction of its fuel surcharge by 5 cents from Euro 0.15 to Euro 0.10 per kg, or equivalent in local currency, based on actual freight weight with effective from 5th May 2003. On 26 March 2003, Cargolux had adjusted its fuel surcharge to Euro 0.20 as an inevitable step in a dramatic fuel cost environment. Effective 18 April 2003, in line with the development of crude oil and jet fuel prices, this fuel surcharge was lowered to Euro 0.15.
This new announcement is in line with the recent favorable evolution of fuel costs and the resulting lowered pressure on its cost structure, allowing Cargolux to apply this reduction, which will be implemented across the Cargolux network according to local legislation.
